A vintage fire engine makes for a unique pumpkin patch at Old Barn Self Storage in Grass Valley.

Families are invited to enjoy the 1952 American LaFrance engine and pick out free pumpkins from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Old Barn Self Storage is at 175 Springhill Drive, Grass Valley – off Idaho-Maryland Road, at the top of the hill.

Onsite managers Lloyd and Maxine Young have enjoyed decorating the facility with flowers, vintage items and harvest characters. The center of their creative display is the white fire engine, which the couple bought from KNCO in 2012, Lloyd Young said.

“We collect cars and motorcycles and antiques,” he said, adding he had seen the engine in a local parade several years ago. “It’s the year that I was born; that’s why I wanted it.”

American LaFrance is a manufacturer of fire engines, ladder trucks, pumpers and related equipment based in Moncks Corner, S.C. It produced its first fire wagon in 1858, according to the company website.
